She Smiles Beneath

She sheds her layers to reveal what they are,
A collection of stories untold.
With a look that says ‘ I’ve been there’,
And a walk that misleads with each step.

Through time many narratives have retold it,
The story of a mind undone.
Too proud to admit when mistakes have been made,
Too nervous to call out for help.

Continuing on with her journey,
Problems & tales left in her wake.
The answer is always quiet simple,
Courage and a smile will change any day.

Let Me Go

Today I met the devil,
But I struggled to run away.
I became the person I hated,
A bad end to another day.

Trapped inside this sad being,
It’s soul a shade of black.
Lost on a sea of torture and tension,
No light there to pull me back.

Obsessed with escape from this place,
With intent as strong as its grip.
Someday I’ll walk in that light again,
A lie to myself I admit.

A day that feels like forever,
I’m so tired, so weak and so scared.
A decision made without care,
This day ended much worse than I feared.

Free Yourself

Demand an adventure as good as your best
Expect a response as true as your last
Feel the happiness that you felt before age
Live life in that moment that mattered.

Grow every day without detailed plans
Travel the earth as if gold lay at the end
Believe in yourself in spite of the doubt
Inspire your soul into to loving this world.

Run in the dark as if the sun lit your way
Laugh at the tale that should bring you to tears
Listen to reason when they started the war
Trust in honesty even though you've been lied to.

Free yourself of the restraints that hold you
Escape from those who seek to quiet you
Rid yourself of the demons that scare you
Your life was created for you.

Come With Me

Take my hand in yours,
Walk with me to the edge.
Feel the ease takeover,
Step out into nothing with me.

Fall with me to the bottom,
To an end that once terrified.
A place of fright and confusion,
Stay in this nothing with me.

Dry my tears when I’m sombre,
Tell me that all is ok.
Embrace me and say that you love me,
Share life in this nothing with me.

Delight

Sheer delight as she skips through the meadow.
A distant brook trickles.
An admirer follows, entranced by her dance.

She spies her companion.
Her smile suddenly curious.
An intrigue captured amongst beauty.

The admirer once sure,
Now hesitant to continue.
Her curious smile drives his rest.

Still in this meadow they are standing.
A sweet scented breeze surrounds.
A gaze of simmering wonder exchanged.

She begins at him with intent,
Curiosity now desire.
His pace quickens towards her.

As the sun polishes the long grass,
And summer embraces every blade.
Love grows in this flowering meadow.

The Answer

Is there a time when madness prevails?
Is there a moment when law makers fail?
Is there an hour when people will fight?
Is there an instant when their pens will write?

Is there a person who will show their hand?
Is there a mind that will create a new plan?
Is there a man who clash with convention?
Is there a woman who will inspire our ascension?

Is there a place where our ideals are confronted?
Is there a land where our plight would be funded?
Is there a space where your life is your own?
This place is a haven; this place is your home.

The Creeper

Passion cries, its screams are scarred,
Tensions tight, profound and hard,
Movements swayed, light but tense,
Smooth yet rough, a lifetime spent.

Music sounds, cries ring out,
Footsteps mingle, move about,
Sorrow heard, laughter marred,
Passion cries, its screams are scarred.

Toil and struggle, no longer real,
Pain and hardship, bruises heal,
Tortured thoughts, must disregard,
Tensions tight, profound and hard.

Sky of crimson, a spotted flock,
Sea of crystal, a heaving dock,
A traveller wanders, ignites suspense,
Movements swayed, light but tense.

The air is heavy, s shawl of intention,
Shadows dance, a heartless deception,
A journey ending, eyes cry torment,
Smooth yet rough, a lifetime spent.

With Ease

Childlike she walks into the room,
Shy, conscious of every step.
A beating heart; trembling hands,
A chill that fills her.

A crowd of eyes descend upon her.
Figuring her out, glasses no longer clink.
Who is she? Why is she here?
They stand entranced, interested and glaring.

The air is now heavy.
The space is filled with murmurs.
Cracks and creeks sound each step.
All this over the chime of keys and strings.

She settles upon a face.
Kind and adoring,
Its warmth encourages smile.
It inspires comfort and confidence.

He turns to her, strong and fearless.
Hello, said without a word.
A kiss, placed without an action.
An embrace, given without a care.

The Fallout

The wasteland unfolds
Echoes are no more.
A dusty solitude.
 Its only denizen,
a sun that hitches a ride on my back and
a moon that pits my skin.
Footsteps embellished with fear.
Moments of quiet sadness anchored with hours of disgruntled pacing
An eternity of why?
The heartbreak of whom?

The horizon is now different.
A shadow is cast.
The isolation of silence,
broken by an outline of disruption.
Moments pass.
My chest drum beats.
A lone companion of nerves,
sneaks down my brow.
Footsteps embellished with fear.
A dusty solitude no more.

Morning

Bright light, the sky is blue.
Warm skin, cheeks a dusky hue.

A gentle wind, a flurry of air.
Wisps of hair cavort without care.

The song sparrow calls out his note.
Onto this moment, the senses yearn to hold.

A smile begins, it starts to grow.
Dimples dug in deep, a guise no longer stone.

Shadowed Sparkle

T’s crossed with her soul, her tears dot the I’s.
A girl with passion but shy.
At home in the corner,
The darkness her spy.

Watching and listening,
The room moves left and right.
Sketching the laughter,
Writing the night.

A powerful insight,
Her eyes pierce the cover.
The angst and the sadness,
They never show one another.

She hears jokes and laughter,
Sees smiles and bodies dancing.
Her work will show a different scene,
A lie that is slowly crashing.

But all the while they will never know,
That their façade is plain to see.
For if they knew it was all a lie,
They will move to the corner with me.

Step Inside

A black path unfolds onto the flames of a red forest.
Dew reflects the despair of the fallen young.
Dread courts the waltzing air,
As it rips at crawling skin.

Ebony talons claw at cheeks,
Piercing the silk woven by time.
A cry of sorrow bellows amongst shattered dreams.
It is a tortured existence, a place without end.

Without a care,
Softness begins to slink amongst the angst.
A slight flare of lustre peeks through the chaos.
A vision of melody to sweep away the dark.

The Trap

You’re the pinch in my vein
All warm but misleading.
A friend in the dark,
My heart slows its beating.

My companion when lonely,
But you make my skin bleed.
A friend in the dark,
 You feed my disease.

Dear family and friends,
No longer we see.
A friend in the dark,
Your grip clings to me.

The life I once lived,
You tell me it’s over.
A friend in the dark,
My heart beats much slower.

This windowless room,
A prison, no bars.
A friend in the dark,
You’ve taken the stars.

You’re the pinch in my vein,
No longer warm, still misleading.
My friend in the dark?
Your intentions were deceiving.

Alone in this space, I’m scared & alone,
He scratches and pulls at the beating.
My friend now screams with anger,
No longer is he misleading.

What Was

The pebbles crunch beneath tiny toes,
An eager dash to splashing water.
A mother’s reach protects them,
Both father and a daughter.

An eager dash to splashing water,
A gleeful burst of song.
Both father and a daughter,
A love that’s new but strong.

A gleeful burst of song,
A tidal wave of bliss.
A love that’s new but strong,
A moment sealed with a kiss.

A tidal wave of bliss,
Shattered by a waking storm.
A moment sealed with a kiss,
No longer true in the light of morn.

Shattered by a waking storm,
Her reach finds empty space.
No longer true in the light of morn,
This is a lonely silent place.

Her reach finds empty space,
No father and no daughter.
This is a lonely silent place,
Her dreams relive her torture.

Patch Down Deep

Patch down deep,
Cover the cracks,
It makes you weep,
Into the soul it seeps.

Play it down,
Cover the light,
You look so good,
When your wearing that frown just right.

Play it cool,
Nobody knows,
Push that light on down,
When it decides to glow.

Hurry up,
 Don’t waste a tear,
The party’s just begun,
All of your fears are here.

Dancing round,
Calling your name,
Squeezing your light back down,
The end is to bring you pain.

Patch down deep,
Cover your tracks,
Into your night it creeps,
No sunshine to take you back.

My Poetry Story

I am currently a second year student in college. I am studying Business w/ Music and Instrument Technology. I have a strong interest in business but I am also passionate about creating a story through writing.

This blog will be used as a platform to share my original poetry and the illustrations that accompany them in my book.

She Smiles Beneath is my first published poetry collection. It is a self published offering through Blurb.com and as a first effort, I am very proud of it.
Inspiration for the content comes mainly from personal experiences but also inspired by life events  of friends and family.
Throughout the book there runs a theme of angst and struggle, often followed by a moment of happiness and acceptance.

I hope you enjoy reading my works as much as I have enjoyed writing them.

Thank You,

Deirdre Curley
